Context
GreenStand is a non-profit, open-source project existing to help reverse the downward cycle of deforestation in economically-stressed areas of the world. In developing countries facing deforestation, inhabitants who don’t have a reliable source of income sometimes turn to cutting down trees for income. GreenStand’s main goal is to offer people in these areas an alternative way to make money and support their local environment and the environment at large.
The Problem
There currently isn’t a self-sustaining restoration platform that connects in developing countries with socially and environmentally concerned world citizens. GreenStand is working on creating a data-driven, scientific approach to reforestation and conservation that provides employment to the communities most affected by deforestation.
The Challenge
GreenStand’s current product offering is TreeTracker, an Android app that aims to create a transparent link to trees/planters and collect valuable data on tree planting efforts. There are two main user groups of TreeTracker - the planters and the people/organizations making donations that end up funding the wages of the planters. My task is to improve the UX of the map screen that donors use to see the trees and planter profiles.
This project is still underway, so check in with me for any updates! Visit GreenStand’s website at https://www.greenstand.org/.
